South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy said Thursday that Hillary Clinton is a “habitual, serial liar.”
The Republican, who chaired the House Select Committee on Benghazi, was asked during an interview on Fox News about recent stories about the Clinton Foundation as well Clinton’s interview with the FBI last month.
Gowdy said that he questions Clinton’s assertion, which she offered on Wednesday, that the recent stories alleging pay-for-play at the Clinton Foundation are “smoke but not fire.” The Associated Press reported earlier this week that more than half of the meetings Clinton had with private individuals as secretary of state were with Clinton Foundation donors.
“It’s arson. It’s pyromania. It’s not smoke,” Gowdy said of Clinton’s defense.
He added that he has trouble believing Clinton’s defensive claims about the Foundation because she has made false statements in public about her use of a personal email system.
“I couldn’t help but go back and remember the press conference she gave on her emails where every single thing she said proved to be false,” said Gowdy, referring to Clinton’s March 2015 press conference at the headquarters of the United Nations.
That’s the interesting thing about credibility and believability, you can’t just keep it in one compartment. When you are a habitual, serial liar in this facet of life, it tends to make people not believe you in other facets of life.”
